Get Your Story Straight A StepbyStep Guide to Screenwriting by a MillionDollar Screenwriter Diane Drake 9780692640364 Books

I have been a screenwriter for a little over three years now. I have not yet had anything produced, but I'm always writing, reading and finding new ways to improve my craft, as we as writers should be doing. I'm can't even remember how I stumbled onto Diane Drake (I found her on Twitter about a week ago), but I am SO glad I did and bought this book.

I've heard writers MANY times say, "I want to write a screenplay. Where do I start?

START HERE. This is the book you want. Other screenwriting books are wonderful in their own rights (as I've read many others as well), but this book takes you from A to Z. I absolutely love the teaching style in which Diane used. Even though I'm not completely "new" at screenwriting, it was still so incredibly helpful to me and as a brand new writer, I'm confident it will be to you as well. With all the confusion that comes with figuring out how to make this happen (as I had much of this as well when I started out), "Get Your Story Straight" COMPLETELY spells it out for you. Diane also gives takeaways at the end of each chapter, along with some screenwriting exercises so you can apply and practice some of what you've learned.

Again, nothing against other screenwriting books as they have wonderful information in them as well. But let's say you have a puzzle. Some other books say, "The pieces are in there. Find them." Diane says, in essence, "Dump the pieces out of the box. Now, flip them all over so you can see the portion of the picture on each one. First, start with the corner pieces. This is how you find them. Next, the end pieces; this is how you find those..." and so on.

Again, if you need help on where to start, look no further than this book. I can't say enough about it. Diane has taught screenwriting at UCLA and has been successful in the business of screenwriting also. You will not be disappointed.

Get Your Story Straight A StepbyStep Guide to Screenwriting by a MillionDollar Screenwriter Diane Drake 9780692640364 Books Reviews

When a seasoned reader and coverage writer for television recently wrote me that "it is sadly clear that you're using the style of writing that works well for novels but is glaringly out of place in a pilot TV script" I knew I was in trouble. Big trouble. Fortunately for me, I knew that Diane was going to be giving a seminar in my area on Making A Scene, and after I found out that Diane was the writer of one of my favorite movies, WHAT WOMEN WANT, I signed up and purchased the book even before attending the seminar.
Diane was truly a breath of fresh air in her manor of presenting truly valuable information in her seminar, and while reading her book I had that same feeling. Diane helps you take a good hard look at your work, while giving you all the pertinent information on how to make it better. However, t's not like you're reading a book, but it's as if you're gaining such valuable information within a comfortable setting where every word can truly sink in.
Among the several dozens books on screenwriting that I've collected over the decades, this rates within the top three books (as well as seminars) that I would recommend to anyone looking to write their first screenplay or in my case, continually strives to hone sharp and polish up the screenplays I've already written.
I've read plenty of screenwriting books in my day and this is arguably one of the very best. The author has some serious writing chops, having written not just one but two "million dollar" screenplays both of which went on to become bonafide Hollywood hits. What's more she's also worked on the development side for arguably one of the most talented and critically acclaimed producers in business, Sydney Pollack. The author's knowledge of the business and mechanics of being a successful screenwriter is as vast as it is varied. The book is chock full of advice, quotes, resources and humorous anecdotes. As an instructional, the author breaks the key elements of all successful screenplays down into digestible bits so that even the most green of writers will not be overwhelmed. If you're looking for a how to from someone who has been there, done that and done it well, then I highly recommend giving this book a read.
To all you aspiring screenwriters out there, your definitive guide has arrived! This in-depth book will help you think like a writer and show you the ropes, both as you face your blank page, and as you take on the life of a content creator in Hollywood. How do I know? Because I’m an aspiring screenwriter who has faced many a blank page and often not won the battle. Here, Diane Drake, who is a successful screenwriter with produced movies starring the likes of Robert Downey, Jr. and Mel Gibson, breaks everything down into digestible tidbits, such as what the three-act structure is and how to manipulate it to your story's advantage; how to create compelling heroes and villains; and what it takes to write meaningful dialogue that moves the story along. Plus it includes 10 analyses of well-made movies - everything from ROMAN HOLIDAY to IRON MAN to ARGO - which are priceless insights into what works and why. It's very informative to see how the same cogs and gears and principles work so well in such varied films - almost like lifting the hood on your favorite cars to see how they run, with a master teacher by your side to explain every moving part. I wish I’d had this book in hand when I started writing years ago. I truly believe I’d be a better writer now if I had. Don't miss it!
